Control and consent in the connected age: the work of contractors on transnational online education platforms

Abstract Drawing on ABCKID, one of the world’s largest online education platforms, and its six competitors, this paper rethinks control consent work in platform economy. Falling into a new category home-based virtual ABCKID has mobilized group American contractors (e.g. stay-at-home moms) who were previously marginalized US labor market. Using interviews, surveys data, I found that most show high levels job satisfaction due to their relative gains. Furthermore, although imposes strict direct over contractors’ content schedules, it opens room for adapt control. Contractors’ adaptive practices have also made platform’s efforts organize as games less effective. argue these platforms is not only product gains, but result interactions between platforms’ controls.
